Yo Gabba Gabba Live

There's A Party In Your City

Yo Gabba Gabba rocked The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles with their crazy, quirky, fun style that is so distinct. Hundreds of Mommy and Daddy hipsters brought out their little ones to see the five dancing monsters (Muno, Brobee, Plex, Toodee, and Foofa) and one awesome DJ Lance. We were attending with our four-year-old son, Felix, who just couldn’t sit, begging to go on stage and join the furry madness of his favorite characters. I have to confess Roxanna and I were breaking down a few cool moves à la Beastie Boys. We might not be five any more, but the spirit is still kicking the dust!

YoGabba_01_091115_350wLet’s say the show was actually just like one TV extraordinaire and unique episode come to life — alive and 3D crazy! All the characters beamed onto the stage through the giant TV screen in the background, making toddlers and preschoolers ooh and ahh. With the catchy electronic music playing throughout the show, it was impossible to stay still and not burst into an explosion of endless joy and excitement.  Usually, taking your kid to a kid’s show can be a drag (nope, won’t mention any names because I’m too happy that we the broke journalists are treated to these shows, and also too respectful of the hard work everyone is putting into them!), but we were in a groovy haze looking at the fantastic designs of Yo Gabba Gabba, the cool animation and the fresh electronic music. It was like a rave for the munchkins — brilliant!

Our generation (from Roxanna’s 30s to my mid 40s — arrrgh!) can truly appreciate the hip factor that Yo Gabba Gabba exudes, especially with acts like “Biz Markie’s Beat of the Day” and the indie band during “The Music Show” segment, which was The Cold War Kids. It kind of reminded me of my heydays punk-rocking at a Ramones event, or even lately checking out The Aquabats (after all, Christian Jacobs, the co-creator of Yo Gabba Gabba, is the mastermind behind such a cool act!) at a Blink 182 concert.  Of course, like in every episode on TV, this Live show had more than one “Dancey-Dance” segment where a celebrity shows everyone their move, and it was Sarah Silverman to do the honors. Some favorite songs performed were “There’s a Party in my Tummy!” (Thanks, guys — it truly helped us with Felix to have a better time convincing him to eat his carrots and veggies!), “Don’t Be Afraid,” and “I Like to Dance.” Bubbles, confetti, streamers, and balloons fell onto the audience throughout the show, creating a magical rock ambience. From rockstars to kids everywhere, Yo Gabba Gabba gave a fabulous show that anyone at any age would enjoy. We invite you to check out their tour dates and get into the Gabba Gabba grove! Go, people! Go!
