rockhallbox_box_set_20091031aWhile the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies have seen TV airings in recent years, there’s a lot most have not seen — some wry and poignant induction speeches and some amazing (and sometimes sloppy fun) all-star performances. With the release of this new box set, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Live, you get a celebration of musical history honoring those still with us and gone, as the organization celebrates its 25th year.

The box attempts to be organized thematically, which means you get performances shuffled and dealt out like playing cards out of order. A chronological approach would’ve been much better, include grouping each set of performances related to an inducted artist.

Nonetheless, some of the speeches are truly great — Bono on Bob Marley, Bono on Bruce Springsteen, Springsteen on U2, Dylan and Fogerty… Even the less eloquent or stylish speeches are always heartfelt, but it’s those performances where various generations meet that truly generates excitement, such as Prince with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and George Harrison’s son Dhani for “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” or Brother Bruce coming on for U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” or Foo Fighters rocking hard with Queen on “Tie Your Mother Down.” And on and on.

The set also features an entire disc of highlights from the 1995 Concert for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the Cleveland Municipal Stadium, which includes legends James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Al Green.

The behind-the-scenes material, never seen where recent years of rock hall inductions and performances have, include rehearsal footage of Jeff Beck, Flea, Jimmy Page, Joe Perry, Ron Wood and Metallica working out a version of “Train Kept A-Rollin’” for this year’s induction event at Cleveland’s Public Auditorium.

The nine-disc set sells for $119.96 and only through Time Life and the Rock Hall (or maybe eBay too, at this point), though a three-DVD version of the set is also out November 3rd for $39.95, but be warned: you won’t find all the cool stuff on it — just some.   So put the big set on your holiday gift wish list, perhaps, as it features hours of joys, insights, laughs and fond memories of not just rock, but blues, soul and more.
