Rewolf

New Album from Asobi Seksu

rewolf_20091110The latest offering from Brooklyn-based duo Asobi Seksu explores the band’s softer, rawer side. Rewolf, which was recorded at the legendary Olympic Studios in London, is a reworking of previously released songs by the band, along with a few songs that were once only available as B-sides. The whole album is stripped down and, without the fuzziness and crashing drums that usually frequent their songs, the band is more or less forced to stand on their own two feet with limited accompaniment. Luckily, they can, and this album highlights the fact that Asobi Seksu’s brilliance is derived more from their musical abilities and less from their penchant for feedback.

Standout tracks include the hauntingly beautiful “Thursday,” originally from 2006’s Citrus, which features Yuki Chikudate’s diaphanous vocals floating over alternating piano and guitar harmonies with a woman speaking French in the background (the inclusion of the woman’s voice is a little random but gorgeous, nonetheless), “Blind Little Rain,” from this year’s Hush — an even prettier and rawer version of a song that is already exquisitely bare — and the gauzy, tinkling cover of “Suzanne,” originally by Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval. “Walk on the Moon,” from 2004’s Asobi Seksu, and “New Years,” also from Citrus, are also wonderful songs that manage to feel lighter and airier without straying too far from their original sounds.

Rewolf is essentially a compilation album, but the band’s talent gives it enough sturdiness to stand alone as less of a “best of,” and a more of a solid member of Asobi Seksu’s discography. It’s a beautiful album and won’t disappoint Asobi Seksu fans looking for something to tide them over until a new record.
