Fashion's Night Out

This year, New York City’s Fashion Week is adding a unique event to its roster of glamour. Fashion’s Night Out, on Thursday, September 10th, is a global effort to aid ailing retailers and support this year’s fall line. The event in New York City is being coordinated by American Vogue, NYC & Company, the City of New York, and the Council of Fashion Designers. Over 700 retailers across New York City agreed to participate, as well as retailers in a dozen countries abroad. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. and ends at 11:00, and is free and open to the public.
The fall lines are littered with pieces that are throwbacks to the advent of television. Diane von Furstenberg designed several pairs of skinny pants reminiscent of Laura Petrie with a modern twist. Similar skinny pants are also available at Topshop.
The color to watch for while shopping is red. Nearly every designer has a red dress in their collection, from Kay Unger to Nanette Lepore. Most of the dresses are classic cuts. Nanette Lepore’s is a ruffled wrap dress. Kay Unger’s is a belted embroidered shirt dress that could easily make an appearance in Lucielle Ball’s closet.
There is plenty of room in the lines to also create a more rocked-out looked. Several designers included a leather mini skirt, such as Vince and 7 For All Man Kind. Pair the skirt with this season’s printed leggings or over-knee boots to complete the look.
Erin Conroy, the high-low budget shoe trend expert at Brown Shoe (the parent company of Via Spiga), said, “Over-the-knee boots can be folded over for women who want a below-the-knee option.” Even if choosing a more classic style boot this season, Conroy said, “Boots of all heights will be updated with warm colors, straps, buckles, and zippers to create a style more suited to the urban cowgirl.”
Whether shopping for boots or a cocktail dress, Fashion’s Night Out promises to be an unforgettable evening of celebrity sightings, champagne and, of course, clothes.
