Ida Maria
Making Noise in Music

Wouldn’t it be a wonder if every female could walk down the street with the smoldering look of a Victoria’s Secret Angel every minute of every day? Imagine a gentle wind that mysteriously blows perfectly voluminous hair in all the right directions (as opposed to blowing up one’s skirt, causing an unintentional Marilyn moment in Midtown). This is the land where perspiration does not exist, one can lounge around in silk and lace, and strut down the street in stilettos without worrying about inappropriate catcalls, city grates, construction sites, or potholes that tend to dot the urban landscape. Life is very dreamlike and “very sexy.”
Yeah, right.
In a culture where we are inundated with scantily clad women with every passing second, Norwegian singer/songwriter Ida Maria brazenly stated that if a woman wants to put her body out there, “it’s okay.” However, there is one catch: There should be a balance, and the male body should be equally enjoyed.
No argument on that point.
A heavy weight in balancing the gender scales of sexual objectification in music, she also keenly pointed out that women have heavy pressure to look good all the time. “It’s a waste of time and makes it hard for the women to do things for themselves,” she said. For the record, the first half of her name is pronounced “ee-dah” and she’s not the kind of artist “with a fixed way” of presenting herself.
For her, it’s about owning what you’ve got — whether it is your image, your body and, in this case, your craft as an artist. Her personal ideology is only one reason why she’s lighting up the international scene while growing a prominent fan base right here in the United States.
Her own fan list includes Lady Gaga, and Ida Maria believes that beneath the blonde, sexed-up persona, the pop singer is “brilliant.” One thing both artists certainly have in common is distinction in their approach. A mellow conversationalist, Ida Maria possesses her own style and a particular “coolness” that will send any fashion critic with an objection packing.
“It’s important to be free to do what I feel,” she said, and had what she describes as an “individualistic upbringing.”
An equalizing force on a variety of issues, her music is far from diluted as her bad-girl attitude breaks through her unpredictable and passionate rock that’s fused with a variety of other genres. It’s all part of the release of what she identified as “the inner beast that was hiding in my vocal chords.”
With a defiant spirit that ladies like exotic dancer/possible spy Mata Hari or Wild West outlaw Belle Star might admire, this singer is making a statement with her debut album, Fortress Round My Heart. Digitally released earlier this year through Mercury Records, it features a variety of addictive tunes like “I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked,” “Oh My God” and “Queen of the World.”
Like most addictive pleasures, the music of Ida Maria will keep calling your name and taunt you until you simply give in and hit “play.”
For Ida Maria and her band, summer 2009 was spent touring the United States, and she found the New York City in particular to be “intense and big” — an ironic observation since the same can be said for her lyrics and sound. Hints of the 1970s peek through, as her lyrics get right to the point. Her music has the ability to relax you right out of the workday while it simultaneously amps you up for nocturnal playtime. In the end, after taking in a wide range of moods, from piercing frustration to blunt declaration of desire, the experience is almost cathartic and, at times, hypnotic.
With a penchant for reading everything from politics to philosophy and history to economics, connecting to her crowd is a top priority. Fluent in Norwegian, Swedish and English, Ida Maria also has the ability to understand German. However, no matter the language, Ida Maria’s voice keeps pushing until the listener is forced to take note. After all, this is an artist who has captured the attention of Time, Spin, Rolling Stone and Perez Hilton. All you have to do is turn your attention to her website to see what all the fuss is about.
At the end of the day, she wants to “inspire girls to pick up an instrument and make some noise” of their own.
Having a say and making some noise? Now that’s sexy.
