Devotion

An Unauthorized Tribute to Michael Jackson

devotion_20090831We all felt like we knew Michael Jackson. He was there at our crazy cousin’s wedding, while we were putting on eyeliner to go out on Saturday night, and in our favorite bar. His music transcended race and nation — he was at every bar all over the world simultaneously.

Devotion: An Unauthorized Tribute to Michael Jackson is being released today on DVD. The documentary puts together the singer’s life in a clear, linear way that has yet to be expressed by the daily media. Among those interviewed are Berry Gordy and Quincy Jones.

The narrator states that, “Everywhere he went, people loved him and he loved them right back.” Maybe this is why we feel as though we have all lost a friend. The documentary paints Michael in the light true fans remember him in: an entertainer, a supporter of 39 charities, and heavily involved in HIV organizations.

The documentary is a broad overview. It does not touch on subjects as specific as his media appearances with pediatric hemophiliac Ryan White.

Devotion is not the only Michael Jackson documentary currently out. Michael Jackson: The Trial and Triumph of the King of Pop can be found on iTunes. The documentary, hosted by Pearl Jr., essentially focuses on the most known negative part of the singer’s life — the trial — incorporating comments from fans and celebrities. Most of the comments are those of innocence and conspiracy. However, it is a clear illustration of how some thought to capitalize on even his darkest moments.

The subject of the trial seems to be one true fans cared little about while he was alive and even less about now that he is passed on. For true Michael Jackson fans, it was never about the negative, and it never will be.

There is a generation of people who can define their lives between Michael Jackson moments: The Jackson Five on The Carol Burnett Show, The Wiz, the moonwalk, “Man In the Mirror” at Grammys… These are collective memories that join us all.
