Jennifer Garner Interview

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

Emmanuel Itier
Film Editor

She is an action heroine, mother and all-around, girl-next-door, and now Jennifer Garner sits down with Buzzine to tell us about her new role as a girlfriend of the past, as well as wishing to return to action roles.

Emmanuel Itier: How did you get along with Matthew McConaughey on your upcoming film, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past?

Jennifer Garner: We got along easily from the beginning. I’m very much myself around him.

EI: You are from Texas as well?

JG: I was born there, but I grew up in West Virginia. I am fifth generation there. I used more [of] a West Virginia hillbilly accent when I was growing up. When I got to college, all I wanted to do was Shakespeare, so my professor was like, “Well, we’ve got to crack this!”

EI: Did you ever experience players in your dating life?

JG: I’m sure I did, but I wouldn’t have put [up with it] though. The women in the movie know they’re getting into it. He’s honest about who he is. He’s not necessarily likeable, but they also should have never gone for it.

EI: Do you think it’s possible to change someone?

JG: My mum gave me one excellent piece of advice — she would tell my sisters and me: “Never marry a man thinking you can change him.” I think that just goes for hanging out on a set with them, dating them or whatever the situation is — you are you and they are them, and if you can’t appreciate that, then you should just move on.

EI: Was Ben [Affleck] perfect when you married him?

JG: Ah, I’m not going to tell you about Ben…but I’ll think about him.

EI: You’re happily married still?

JG: [Laughs] Yeah, so obviously things are…so far, so good!

EI: Did you have a role in choosing the children who portrayed you as little kids?

JG: I did. The teenage version of me played me in 13 Going on 30. I requested her. She’s a great actress and a very good ‘me.’

EI: What do you look for to sign on for movies now?

JG: Well, there are three things -– the script, the director and the co-star — and this film was pretty great in all of them.

EI: Next role?

JG: I did a movie right after this — right now it’s called The Side of the Truth, but that may change. It’s with Ricky Gervais.

EI: Are you going back to be an action heroine again?

JG: Only if Matthew invites me. We were just talking about it.

EI: Would you like to play a comic book super hero?

JG: Yeah, Wonder Woman would be good, and that’s still out there.

EI: What is your routine now, since you’re not going back to being a heroine?

JG: I actually still work with the same trainer, Valerie Waters, and she put our routine online — RedCarpetReady.com. That’s what we do. When I can, we workout together, but I had a good hike yesterday.

EI: Do you have any plans on returning to TV?

JG: I don’t know what I’m going to do next, but no, I don’t have any plans. That is too much work. I like doing TV. A good job is a good job, so I’m not a snob in that respect about saying I wouldn’t do TV. The on-going relationships you have, if you’re on a show with your character, the other cast members in their characters and the crew — you just can’t replicate that. The familiarity of the first couple of years of just really digging in and knowing these people and knowing what your character would do in every situation is really great. Having said that, work-wise, compared to a movie, I just can’t even imagine right now doing that again [with two daughters], but some day…
