Kevin Smith’s one-joke comedy romance starring Judd Apatow’s leading man, Seth Rogan, arrives in stores this week on DVD.  Released last October, it seemed the comedy would be destined to be a hit, considering the Apatow-like marketing it received.  But like virtually every Kevin Smith movie, the audience ran away in droves and the film barely grossed over $30 million dollars…and for good reason.

There’s nothing too funny or unique here to grab even the most curious mind for more than a few minutes. Rogen is an affable enough guy, but his days of leading man material will soon be put to a stretch if he doesn’t choose his roles more carefully.

The main problem with the movie lies in the title and expectation.  It is neither scintillating nor all that funny. Even the addition of Superman’s Brandon Routh as a porn star does little to elevate the chuckle quotient.

Writer-director Kevin Smith does little to prove he’s evolved into a seasoned filmmaker, given his early successes with Chasing Amy and Clerks.

Ironically, given the obvious failure, both critically and commercially, of Zack & Miri, Showtime recently announced Seth Rogen will be executive-producing a new a half-hour pilot set in the world of a small porno studio set in the valley.

Here’s hoping there are more laughs to mine on the small screen…or at very least some decent full-frontal nudity.
