The recent reign of terror in Mumbai affected more than just lives –- it also forced the cancellation of a massive benefit concert promoting environmental awareness, according to officials.

Live Earth India, a multinational concert featuring appearances by Jon Bon Jovi and former United States vice-president Al Gore, was originally scheduled for December 7th in Mumbai. However, in light of a series of bombings and hostage situations that cast a dark cloud over the city in recent days, the concert was indefinitely postponed -– perhaps cancelled.

According to a statement released to the media, the organizers were “stunned and saddened by the tragic events of the past few days” in which two hotels and several major sites in Mumbai were reportedly attacked by gunmen in an organized effort.

No reference was made by the organizers regarding a rescheduled future event in the city or country.

A detailed statement on the Live Earth website stated the following:

“Everyone involved with Live Earth India, from our U.S.- and India-based staff, artists, and crew to our India-based broadcast, production, non-profit, and marketing communications partners, is stunned and saddened by the tragic events of the past few days in our host city, Mumbai. We always felt very welcomed and safe as we spent more time on the ground in Mumbai to finalize plans for Live Earth India, scheduled for December 7th.

“Due to circumstances far beyond our control, we are saddened to announce that Live Earth India has been cancelled. We will continue to work for solutions to the climate crisis for the good of the people of India and around the world. But for now, our thoughts and our prayers are with the victims of this terrible attack, with the bereaved, with the people of Mumbai, and with everyone in India.”

Taking place in India, due to its increasing role as an economic powerhouse and international player, this week’s concert in Mumbai would have brought together big names in American and Indian entertainment, such as Bon Jovi and Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan. Joining the international star power were a global group of environmental advocates and celebrities.

Following a similar concert in July 2007, the Live Earth musical extravaganza was conceived as an international event bringing worldwide attention to current environmental struggles and issues. Last year’s event was a simultaneous, featuring 150 acts performing in four continents over a 24-hour period.

If Sunday’s concert would have continued as planned, the proceeds were to be distributed among several charities throughout the country.

According to concert organizers, refunds will be honored and detailed information will soon be made available on the concert’s website.
