Bollywood’s upbeat music and pop talent may be on global display after Universal Music announced a joint venture with UK-listed Indian film company Eros International, it was reported Wednesday.
With the deal, both groups hope to launch an artist-management agency to “groom and promote” Indian pop talent outside of the subcontinent.
“Music and films are naturally intertwined, so the synergy is unmistakable. As we continue to expand our film slate, we are constantly searching for new talent,” Kishore Lulla, chief executive of Eros International, told reporters.
“Our tie-up with Universal, and their expertise in pop music talent management, is perfectly complimentary with Eros’ ability to offer a credible platform for such talent through its films or worldwide distribution network. The possibilities for Indian and international collaborations are very exciting.”
Under terms of the announced deal, Eros International will recruit musicians and, in turn, “hand off” the talent to Universal, who will develop and promote the artist.
In a related yet separate announcement, EMI Music and Warner Music Group reportedly agreed to extend their existing distribution and marketing partnerships in India. The reported deal also includes distributorships in the Middle East and Turkey.
The licensing agreement extends EMI’s presence as local distributor for Warner Music in India and the Middle East. EMI has operated in the same capacity since 2005, except in Turkey, where Warner Music currently operates as distributor. When the multi-year deal takes effect, EMI will replace Warner Music as Turkey’s local distributor.
“With us currently serving as EMI’s distributor in South East Asia, and with EMI serving as our distributor in India, the Middle East, and Turkey, we have developed a strong partnership that we’re pleased to be expanding with this deal,” said John Reid, an executive with Warner Music International.
