Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s

Not Animal

Rosa Jurjevics
Contributing Writer

So, The So and So’s have not one but two new albums, twin follow-ups to The Dust of Retreat, which proved itself to be a solid 12 tracks of strings-heavy, indie-rock, post-angst bliss — one track of which was allegedly first recorded in a bathroom. Since being signed to Epic records, the eight-piece frenzy that includes a violin and crashing cacophony of makeshift percussion instruments has upped the ante and released two discs containing more of the same goodness.

Even though, on “As Tall As Cliffs,” frontman Richard Edwards half-borrows a line from Courtney Love (”when we wake up/in our makeup”), the album is fairly solid but not as instantly lovable as Dust. The writing, however, is strong; The So and So’s sound remains true to its roots and, save for a few lesser tracks, like “A Children’s Crusade on Acid” (which is partially shot through with a high-pitched whine), it’s a great sophmore — junior? — effort. Even if possessing a slightly more detached air about it, sweet harmonies and muffled percussive tangents sweep in and out in true Margot style on most of the tracks. Twenty-two-year-old Edwards’ voice is well-showcased around an ensemble of marimbas and violins or set against the backdrop of a stripped-down, driving acoustic guitar.
