Almost ten weeks after floods ravaged through the northern Indian state of Bihar, Bollywood actor Arjun Rampal and filmmaker Farhan Akhtar are putting together a concert to raise funds for flood victims.
To be held in Mumbai on October 31st, the Rock On for Humanity concert will raise funds to set up rehabilitation camps for women and children in some of Bihar’s most affected areas.
“The papers were also full of all these terrible things that the floods were doing in Bihar,” Rampal told reporters. “That’s when we thought we should do something about this.”
In the height of monsoon season, the Koshi River, which empties into Bihar from Nepal and the Himalayas, flooded and soaked most of the small Indian state. Approximately 2.3 million people were reportedly affected by the high floods, which inundated densely populated towns and villages after man-made embankments along the Koshi River failed.
There were reportedly 300 flood-related deaths in the two months that followed.
The idea for the benefit concert came up after Rampal was reading about the success of his most recent Bollywood film, Rock On, in local newspapers. After discussing it with Akhtar and the film’s producer, Ritesh Sidhwani, the group decided to go forward with a concert based upon the hit movie.
“Rehabilitation will take a lot of time and effort,” lawmaker Priya Dutt told reporters. Dutt’s organization, the Nargis Dutt Memorial Charitable Trust, is associated with the benefit concert.
“We hope this concert will go a small way towards that end.”
Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Hritik Roshan were invited to make an appearance at the concert, according to the benefit’s organizers.
Rock On was released in India on August 29th, about 11 days after flooding struck in Bihar. The movie is about four friends who start a band and struggle to make it big.
