One week after Disney released its first Bollywood production, Warner Bros. released details of its cross-over production in the India and China markets.
The Hollywood-based production studio is finalizing production with Chandni Chowk to China, starring Akshay Kumar. A Bollywood-martial arts hybrid, Kumar stars as a cook in China from the India town of Chandni Chowla, who is mistaken by local villagers as a reincarnation of an ancient warrior.
Said to be a semi-autobiographical sketch of Kumar’s life, the popular Bollywood star was formerly a martial arts instructor and relies upon his own experiences in playing his character.
Chandni Chowk to China is the first ever production involving Hollywood, Bollywood, and China’s burgeoning film industry known as Chillywood. The film was previously known as Mera Naam Chin Chin Choo and Made in China.
Making his Bollywood debut in the movie is Chinese superstar Gordon Liu.
Co-starring with Kumar and Liu is Deepika Padukone, who plays a double role as a Chinese woman and an Indian woman.
The film, scheduled for a January 16th release, also stars Mithun Chakraborty, Roger Yuan (Batman Begins), and Chia Hui Liu (Kill Bill Vol. 2).
Chandni Chowk to China is the third Hollywood/Bollywood collaboration project. Warner Bros. released Saas Bahu aur Sensex earlier this year, while Disney’s joint animated production of Roadside Rodeo opened last week throughout India.
