How to Be “Real” for Reality TV
Head to the NYC Reality TV School! Really!

Reality TV. It’s where everyday people get their shot at fame and fortune. And for those lucky and talented enough, 15 minutes of fame can explode into full-blown careers (i.e., Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who was a fourth place runner-up on Survivor and went on to become a full-time member of The View; Jennifer Hudson who went from being a losing contestant on American Idol to winning the Oscar for her performance in Dreamgirls).
Well, as a sure sign that humanity as we know it is now officially doomed, a school has actually been created in New York City (the metropolis of all things real, of course) to teach future fame-whores how to get on a reality show and be “real”…but better.
Called the New York Reality TV School, students are taught how to be their “real selves” on reality shows yet still stand out from the crowd and get noticed. (We all want to learn how to be “real” now, don’t we?)
Created by 43-year-old acting coach Robert Galinsky, the school offers a five-week workshop where students will “face challenges, obstacles, conflicts and camaraderie-building found on reality TV shows.”
This genius of a workshop is broken down into three sections:
Improvisation and Reality TV Conflict:
Students will become more confident by trusting their own style and instincts through theater and film exercises that further explore developing a trust of their originality, life stories, and embarrassing moments and experiences. (I know I want to be taught how tell 50 million complete strangers about all MY embarrassing moments, don’t you?)
On-Set Training and the Audition Tape:
Students will explore on-set behavior and will also learn how best to make a tape for submission with hands-on exercises and the shooting of an actual tape. (I wonder if female students are taught how to bring out their “ho’ness” when auditioning for Flavor of Love.)
Tape Viewing and Guest Lecture Q & A
Submission tapes will be critiqued by guest lecturers. There will be an extended question and answer period with guest lecturers and a closing graduation celebration. (Aw, it’s nice that students get a party to celebrate their “realness”.)
To further guide students on the world of reality TV, Galinksy has corralled an impressive group of E-list reality celebrities. They’re alums from shows such as Survivor, Martha Stewart’s Apprentice, Top Chef, Beauty and the Geek, and The Bachelor. (I think even Kathy Griffin is too A-list for this bunch!)
So now you may ask, just what is the price of “realness”? How does $299 sound?
I guess that’s a fair amount of change to teach someone how to be “real.” But, in my humble opinion, if you need to pay some guy $299 on how to be “real,” I think you have more problems than a five-week reality TV seminar can solve.
Instead, just take my advice: save your money and get a LIFE! Really!
