Venice, Italy — Natalie Portman has been awarded a Humanity Award for social commitment at the Venice Film Festival.
Portman, 27, is the very first recipient of this award, intended to honor artists who contribute to humanitarian causes. The prize included $50,000 cash, which the actress plans to donate to charity in Tanzania.
Portman has been active in the Jane Goodall Institute of Tanzania, which does wildlife research and education. The Star Wars prequel trilogy star has also been involved with the Tacare Girl’s Scholarship Program, which provides educational opportunities for disadvantaged women.
To make her Italian stay even brighter, Portman’s directorial debut, Eve, was apparently a big hit with festival-goers, who lined up around the block to get in. The 22-minute short film is about a girl who finds herself intruding on her grandmother’s romantic date, and includes Lauren Bacall and Ben Gazzara in the cast.
Portman was on the jury at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is a Harvard University graduate.
