Terrorist Attacks Almost Claim Life of Bachchan

The heir of Bollywood’s first family flirted with death on Saturday. Unfortunately, dozens of people were not as lucky as Abhishek Bachchan, as a series of five terrorist-like blasts rocked the Indian capital of New Delhi on Saturday afternoon.

Because of a traffic jam, Abhishek Bachchan told his driver to turn the other way as he approached Connaught Place in New Delhi. Moments after he turned around, two blasts shook the area, claiming several lives. The junior Bachchan was scheduled to attend a function there on Saturday evening.

The son of Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek, was in New Delhi as part of a media promotional event and to shoot the final scenes of his upcoming film, Dilli 6.

“Abhishek had left in the afternoon for New Delhi and was on his way to Connaught Place for a function he had to attend,” Amitabh said Sunday in his blog about his son’s experience. “Minutes away from there, the traffic became a snarl and he knew he would not make it in time, so he asked to turn back. And the blast happened just then.”

The alleged terrorist attacks in New Delhi claimed at least 24 lives and injured about 100, according to recent reports from the Indian capital. Two of the blasts occurred at Connaught Place, while two other explosions occurred at the Greater Kailash M-Block market, and another one in Gaffar Market.

Amitabh added, on his blog, that his son was “shattered and shocked” about the explosions.

In light of Saturday’s events, it is questionable whether Abhishek will continue his current projects, according to his father’s blog.

“He was just not able to conduct them. Cancelled them. It would have been too insensitive,” Amitabh wrote, adding the junior Bachchan let the producers of Dilli 6 determine whether shooting would continue.

“He has left the decision to the producers,” Amitabh added on his blog. “Canceling would be interpreted as succumbing to the threat. I wonder what they decide.”

On behalf of his family, Amitabh was quick to support the victims and their families, stating, “Jaya and I sit alone in the house, our hearts still with the tragedy in Delhi. What of those who bore the brunt — innocent unaware and victims?

“We live in difficult times. What kind of an environment are we leaving behind for our next generation? Or do we not concern ourselves with that? We need peace and harmony.”

Local authorities are investigating the series of “terror” attacks in New Delhi, which police say are strikingly similar to a series of blasts in the Gujarat city of Ahmedabad and the Karnataka capital city of Bangalore earlier this year.

According to Agence France-Presse, a local Muslim group, known as the Indian Mujahideen, claimed responsibility for the weekend’s attack. The same group, apparently known throughout law enforcement as an underground Islamic militant group, also claimed responsibility for a series of bombings in July that claimed about 45 lives in Ahmedabad and Bangalore.
