It’s Fun To Do Bad Things
Max Snow's Striking Exhibition

This weekend is the last chance to see photographer Max Snow’s striking exhibition, “It’s Fun to do Bad Things,” at the Moeller Snow Gallery in New York. The show consists of portraits of an impressive collision of fringe groups—the Ku Klux Klan in rural America, gang members from downtown Los Angeles, and the underground world of black metal bands in Norway and Sweden.
Snow’s photographs of black metal bands are the show’s most abrasive – each picture depicting gruesome men covered in leather and animal blood, theatrically posing with bones and upside-down crucifixes. His portraits of Los Angeles gang members are classic and simple in contrast; the subjects peer stoically at the camera, calmly baring the tattoos alluding to their colorful personal histories. The real stars of the show, however, are the Klansmen, whom Snow allowed to pose for the camera on their own accord. The resulting photographs consist of quiet, eerily beautiful scenes depicting masked KKK members dancing together and holding flowers in nature. In a piece titled “Grand Dragon,” a Klan member wearing a green hood and red cape defiantly holds a shotgun, much like a depraved American superhero. Another photograph, “Reeds,” is a haunting shot of a Klansmen practically camouflaged by the engulfing landscape surrounding him. These photographs are slightly disturbing in their quiet beauty, creating an interesting conflict of emotions for a viewer torn between interest and repulsion.
While Snow depicts his subjects matter-of-factly and without judgment, the tongue-in-cheek title of the show, “It’s Fun To Do Bad Things,” hints at some of the darker themes lurking just beneath the surface. A bizarre and clever mix of humor, historical documentation, uncomfortable subject matter, and gorgeous camera shots, Snow’s impressive exhibition marks him as an up-and-coming photographer to keep an eye on.
