With song titles such as “Porno Creep,” “Ass Itch,” and lyrical samples like “All I wanna do is kill you,” does it come as any surprise that Korn guitarist Brian “Head” Welch left his band in 2005 to dedicate his life to Christ? To millions of fans who had grown accustomed to Korn’s image as a group of emotionally damaged, drug-addled youths, probably the last road they thought one of its members would take would have a sign marked “Onward Christian Soldier!”
But, on March 10, 2005, less than a month after leaving Korn, Head was baptized in the Jordan River and declared himself free of drugs after having been through his “own personal rehab” with God. Free from his addictions to alcohol, methamphetamines, Xanax, and sleeping pills…and free also from the confines of having to write and record with Korn, Welch set out to begin composing for his solo album, titled Save Me from Myself, set for release on September 9th of this year.
“My music is going to have a Christian, spiritual edge to it, for sure,” claims Welch. While appreciating that Korn’s efforts allowed kids to let out their aggressions, he apparently wants “…kids to know that there’s more out there. I want to show them that there’s light at the end of the pain tunnel.”
The album’s first single, “Flush,” is every bit as heavy as something one would expect from Head’s former band mates, but with a unique industrial flare a-la Faith No More. Its vivid descriptions of the consequences of binge drinking and the party lifestyle so common among the youth of America leave little doubt to Welch’s intentions of creating an unrelenting atmosphere in his music.
“‘Flush’ is a perfect way for me to come back into the music world because it’s basically about flushing all the crap in life down the toilet and starting out fresh—exactly what I’ve been doing for the last few years. All the drama that I experienced with getting drunk and doing drugs all the time seemed interesting and amusing to write about. That lifestyle is total insanity and I’m just glad I’m not dead and I was able to write a song like ‘Flush.’”
Apart from preparing for the release of Save Me from Myself, Head has been hard at work contributing to humanitarian causes in India and touring in support of his autobiography. His philanthropic pursuits have been extending into building orphanages in poverty-stricken areas of the Indian sub-continent (buildings appropriately titled “Head Homes”) and visiting a tribe of headhunters who have been reduced to cannibalism due to lack of food.
Save Me from Myself will be released under the Driven Music Group, started by Welch and the Warner Music Group.
Additional musicians on the album include bassist Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, Liquid Tension Experiment) and Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle), with drums and percussion provided by Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle, Nine Inch Nails).
