Apparently, Walt Disney will be the next major player to jump into the Bollywood pool.

After a string of successes in Hollywood’s children’s movie market, Disney has agreed to take on a similar role halfway around the world to India, where there maybe more children than the entire population of the United States.

In a groundbreaking, historic deal, Walt Disney will distribute a major Bollywood title across its home-video network.

The accord with UTV Motion Pictures, which was reached on Monday, will pass the rights of Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par to Disney, which will distribute the movie in North America, England, and Australia.

According to sources, the deal is worth about $1.68 million.

UTV will oversee distribution rights in certain Indian territories, and is seeking to license them within its home nation as well.

Taare Zameen Par focuses on the relationship between a rebel teacher and an eight-year-old boy living in an imaginary world.

Under the agreement, Khan will still play an active role in the development of the home-video by providing special commentary, behind-the-scenes footage, and storyboard illustrations.

This week’s deal is the result of a working relationship between Disney and UTV. Recently, Disney bought UTV’s children’s channel Hungama. In February, Disney doled out $200 million to increase its stake from 14% to 33% in parent company UTV Software Communications, while paying an additional $30 million to secure a 15% stake in UTV Global Broadcasting.
