Comic book artist Michael Turner died Friday night (June 27th) in Santa Monica, California. He was 37.
Turner, who’d illustrated some of the biggest characters in comics such as Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, and Fantastic Four, had spent the past eight years battling chondrosarcoma, a form of cancer that affects bones and cartilage.
With an art style that combined elements of super-hero realism with pin-up art that resulted in some of the sexiest-looking female characters to ever appear in comics, Turner was also known for Witchblade and Fathom, as well as a host of other comics stories, and especially comic book and graphic novel covers. He was an instrumental cover artist for Marvel’s Civil Wars crossover series and DC’s Identity Crisis.
In 2002, he founded his company Aspen Comics while continuing to illustrate for major comics publishers.
