Underdog
Disney

The kind of Disney or otherwise film you don’t get in theaters a lot anymore – live action fantasy silly fun. Based on the 1960s animated TV series starring Wally Cox as the the voice of Underdog, the movie adapts it nicely for the “real” world, with Jason Lee as the pooch voice, Jim Belushi in another former cop role (and he does ‘em so well), and Alex Neuberger as a dog’s best friend. More watchable at home, in fact, than in the theater, this plays well for the ten and under set. The bonus material includes the very first cartoon show episode.

Sonic Underground
Shout Factory

The complete adventures Sonic the Hedgehog and his two siblings, Manic and Sonia as the rock band Sonic Undeground, the trio faces off against Dr. Robotnik and also search for their mother, Queen Aleana of the land of Mobius. This was the third in the cartoon based on SEGA’s Sonic videogames, the hero voiced by Family Matters‘ Jaleel White. The stories don’t try to just mirror the videogames and, in fact, find a life of their own as stylized super-hero animal fantasy. The songs are also cute for kiddles.

The New Adventures of the Lone Ranger and Zorro
BCI/Eclipse

As it’s been said, anyone who hears “The William Tell Overture” and doesn’t think of The Lone Ranger is just a snob. And Zorro, the fox? It’s swashbuckling time. This set matches up episodes starring the two most famous masked men of the west. Produced by filmation in the ’80s, the animation is, yes, slight, on par with the Super-Friends stuff of that time. But
kids aren’t as discerning, and any child of the ’80s will find it all nostalgic. Besides, it’s about “hi-ho silver, away” and swordplay, right? Both The Lone Ranger and Zorro are voiced by William Conrad (TV detective Cannon and the large fellow of Jake and the Fatman.
