Ho Ho Ho Ho A Pirate Time for Thee
At Worlds End DVD is a Rollicking Epic
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
Disney
Move this one to the top of the holiday gift-giving DVD list. Reviewed by Buzzine earlier this year, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End wraps up the Disney trilogy, while leaving things open for another installment (maybe in 2009? That would fun).
Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow is more addled, darn clever, and damn lucky as ever, while Geoffrey Rush delivers an argghh-delight, Oscar-worthy performance, returning as Captain Barbossa (though the Academy would never….or would they?). Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann still appeals with a combination of sexy luster and spunky bluster, while Orlando Bloom’s young Errol Flynn aura summons a Captain Blood image by the end.
Add a vengeful sea goddess, the fate and truth about the evil Davey Jones, the nasty East India Trading Company, a wonderful cast of supporting characters, plus a gathering of pirate lords from around the globe at Shipwreck Cover, and you have a grand adventure that even tosses in some bizarre, surreal moments more out of French or Italian films than some big-buck American production.
Yes, it’s a long ride–almost three hours–with several settings (Singapore is one of many faces) and literally blow-you-out of the water final battle scenes, with nary a dull moment.
I’ll brawl in any tavern over it: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End was one of the year’s best films. It may not have been the deep, dead-serious stuff that garners all the so-called must-sees from cinema intelligencia who rarely have an adventurous bone in their bodies, but truth be told, those are the kinds of movies you don’t pop in the player on a weekend for a kick. This is and will be, again and again.
The DVD comes out Tuesday, December 4th and will also be available in sure-to-be-stunning Blu-Ray.
