Definitive Dylan Due Next Week

Three Disc Sets and Single Disc Overview

Darryl Morden
Music Editor
Family Editor

While there have been several fine Dylan retrospectives in the past, especially the “Biograph” box (which also offered various rarities and such) and the two-CD “Essential Bob Dylan,” the upcoming “Dylan” on Columbia Records offers a definitive look at the singer-songwriter’s most influential, ground-breaking, and lasting material over the decades.

The release will be available on October 2nd in three versions: A deluxe Collector’s three-CD Box Set, three-CD eight-panel Digipak, and as a Single Disc Select Song Overview.

The collection is culled from four decades of Dylan’s studio recordings. For younger generations, it’s an instant lesson in musical diversity and vision, while older fans will have the opportunity to rediscover music they’d forgotten or perhaps were unaware of from Dylan.

The three-CD collection is broken down as: Disc 1: 1962-1967 - “Bob Dylan” through “John Wesley Harding”; Disc 2: 1967-1985 - “The Basement Tapes” through “Empire Burlesque”; Disc 3: 1986-2006 - “Knocked Out Loaded” through “Modern Times.” The 51-track collection comes packaged in an eight-panel digipak with a 24-page full color booklet and liner notes by music journalist Bill Flanagan.

The three-disc version of DYLAN will also be available in a monumental deluxe collector’s box set, with each of the three discs presented in classic LP-styled sleeves, featuring iconic Dylan and Columbia Records photos from his various albums (and his numerous looks over the years too). The box includes a 40-page book with extended liner notes and rare photos, as well as ten limited edition postcard lithograph prints.

The special single disc edition, packaged in a standard jewel case, will include a color 20-page booklet and feature 18 select songs from the retrospective.

The song selection was influenced by impassioned fans lobbying on the dylan07.com website, which went live in February, focusing on all things Dylan–from fan’s concert stories to in-depth looks at his albums and songs.
