Dave Gilmour Live DVD
Superb Blend of Classic Floyd and Solo Material
Dave Gilmour
Remember the Night - Live From Royal Albert Hall
Sony DVD
Dave Gilmour’s guitar was essential to Pink Floyd as Roger Waters’s vocals and vision. This two-disc set captures the British musician in concert, combining that Floyd legacy with his solo work.
Drawn from three nights at London’s Royal Albert Hall at the end of May, 2006, the material includes selections from Gilmour’s fine solo album, “On an Island,” plus Pink Floyd classics sure to satisfy many a longtime fan. The band includes fellow Floyd member keyboard player Rick Wright and Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera (another axe legend, certainly), along with guest appearances by David Crosby, Graham Nash, Robert Wyatt and David Bowie.
The performances include Floyd’s atmospheric and “Breath” and pinging “Time,” “On An Island,” “The Blue,” “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” (both with Crosby and Nash), “Wish You Were Here,” Crosby, Stills and Nash’s “Find the Cost of Freedom,” and “Comfortably Numb” with Bowie.
There are also alternative versions from the different show dates, as well as Gilmour’s Live From Abbey Road and AOl Sessions, a BBC Mermaid Theatre performance, plus several documentaries and music videos. For anyone who didn’t catch Gilmour touring, this set captures it well and offers the bonuses too. It’s also a fine companion to Gilmour’s prior, mostly acoustic DVD from a few years back.
