The cast of the award-winning Vietnamese film, The Rebel, are to attend the Bangkok International Film Festival in July. The film, which has been highly acclaimed with its strong storyline and classy filming, is one of the movies tipped to do well in the ASEAN category at the festival. On its premier showing in Vietnam, it outstripped US film The Marine, in terms of audience viewings, by a large margin.

Set in Vietnam of the 1920s, the drama centers on the life of a Vietnamese student returning to his homeland from his studies in France. The main character, Cuong, is played by Vietnamese-American, Johnny Tri Nguyen, who includes in his CV stuntman on Spider Man 1 and 2. In his more down-to earth role as Cuong, he is persuaded to carry out a special mission for a French colonialist. On his mission, he meets Thuy, played by the stunning actress Ngo Thanh Van, whose career has rocketed from fashion model to teenage pop idol, and now to major Asian movie star. Her appearance in Bangkok is certain to cause a stir, as will the rest of this talented collection of movie stars.

Speaking from California, executive producer Tawny Nguyen said, ” On behalf of the cast of The Rebel, it will be an honor to come to the Bangkok Film Festival,” and all movie fans will look forward to seeing the stars in Bangkok. There’s no doubt Vietnam is becoming a strong force in Asian cinema, and The Rebel will be one film not to miss.

The Bangkok International Film Festival runs from July 19th, with its opening night razzmatazz, through to July 29th, when the latest production from Thailand’s Five Star studios closes the festival. SF Cinema World hosts the event.
