Another day in paradise, another perfect day to rock all night long! Truly, it was one of those fine moments of rock ‘n roll when John Rzeznick and his mates of The Goo Goo Dolls stormed the stage at the Santa Barbara bowl (www.santabarbarabowl.com). With their new album already Gold-certified, “Let Love in”, they had us already on our knees even before their fireworks of guitars-gone-wild and space-rocket songs blasted our souls all over the universe, back and forth.
I remember the young Goo Goo Dolls just off the nest way back in 1988, when I graced the Californian shore. They had already formed two years before, and through the ’90s, they were going to permanently put their print on the hall of rock ‘n roll fame with new classics such as: “Name”, “Iris”, Slide”, “Here is Gone”, and “Black Balloon”. But it seemed to me that they were quite shy and “hiding” behind their songs, probably due to a good dose of humbleness. But these days are gone and they know now how to make ONE with the crowd, with their passionate fans. To be comfortable in your own skin takes time, and when you’re a rocker, it’s like being a lizard, a lizard king à la Morrison, where one is expected to lose its own envelope and embrace a new one as the flow of his career is surfing the ups and downs of the music charts.
But whether being high or low, The Goo Goo Dolls know who they are, and this gives them confidence–the confidence that they already reached immortality through their music. The confidence to take us on their wings, take off in the far above, and kiss the sky for one more night. You just need to close your eyes, let love in, and surrender to the music. Rock on!
