Harry Potter Goes Green
Printed on Recycled Paper
Harry Potter author JK Rowling The last installment of the Harry Potter saga, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, is set to have the largest first-run print of 12 million copies. Fortunately,
Scholastic, Inc., the publishing company, has teamed up with the Rainforest Alliance on tougher environmental standards for the book.
At a length of 784 pages, that represents a large ecological impact, so knowing that each copy will consist of at least 30% recycled paper, the deluxe version of the book will be 100% recycled paper.
This comes after numerous environmental groups have been faulting the printing company with not using enough recycled paper on previous installments of the series.
Ironically, several previous editions in Europe and Canada have been eco-friendly, but this is the first major push for the US versions to go green. And while 30% isn’t perfect, it’s a great start.
