Annual Hollywood Bowl Fest Set for June ¿0a
Hugh and some of the performers from this years line up The 29th Annual Playboy Jazz Festival is set for Saturday, June 16th and Sunday, June 17th at its longtime venue, the Hollywood Bowl.
This year’s line-up will feature giants of both jazz and blues. Chicago blues hero Buddy Guy will perform on Saturday, while the legendary Etta James will appear on Sunday, and the festival will also celebrate the 80th birthday of tenor sax player Red Holloway.
Among the top jazz artists booked include The Phil Woods Quintet, Terence Blanchard, The Randy Brecker-Bill Evans Soulbop Band, James Carter Organ Trio, and The Count Basie Band, directed by Bill Hughes.
Latin jazz gets its due through appearances from Cuban-born trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and salsa orchestra Johnny Planco y Su Conjunto Amistad, while African-world artist Angelique Kidjo is also set to perform. Mainstream-drawing smooth jazz types will include best-selling trumpet player Chris Botti and Norman Brown’s Summer Storm group.
For the 27th year, Bill Cosby will serve as dry-wit master of ceremonies.
