Alice Coltrane, widow of legendary and revolutionary saxophonist John Coltrane, passed away on Friday. She was 69 years old.

Alice, originally a pianist and organist, joined up with John in the early ’60s. Before passing away, he converted to Hinduism and was also one of the founders of free jazz.

After his passing, Alice continued his musical explorations, as well as his spiritual ones, starting The Vedic Center in Los Angeles.

Their son, Ravi Coltrane, a saxophonist, was also a prominent feature of her last tour, which saw select cities last fall. Some of her early albums under her own name, such as “A Monastic Trio” and “Ptah, the El Daoud”, were critically acclaimed.
