Spanish bombshell Penelope Cruz was proclaimed a “Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters” by France’s Minister of Culture.

“She is a great European actress,” said Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, as he praised her international roles that include French, English, Italian and, her native, Spanish. “It’s France’s role to be the ardent defender of cultural diversity, and to recognize those who extend, with their talent, the culture of their country,” said culture minister de Vabres. “I’m happy to honor this great European actress.”

“I’m not sure that I deserve it, but I will do my best so that you won’t regret it,” said the modest, blushing Cruz during the ceremony at the Culture Ministry.

The actress is in Paris to herald her new film, “Bandidas. ” The minister cited “Bandidas” as an example of Cruz’s ability to work with a diverse cast of international talent. The movie, a Western about two female outlaws set in 19th century Mexico, was written and produced by French filmmaker Luc Besson.

Mexican beauty and Bandida’s co-star Selma Hayek was on hand to give her friend Cruz a warm hug of congratulations.
